The following information is now a bit dated
but still quite fascinating and was very
kindly offered by Mr. Walter Dunn, Chairman of
The Fowlers Bay Local Dog Fence Board at that
time.
Their jurisdiction covers some 3477 sq. kms.
of country containing only 31 rate-payers, and
124 kms of dog- fence. The
dog-fence from Penong Corner to Colona Corner
was erected in 1905, from Colona Corner to the
Eyre Highway in 1978/79 and from the Eyre
Highway to the Coast in 1977.
A solar powered electric fence was started in
October 1981 with a 16km stretch, followed by
a further 3kms in April 1982 and then another
70kms from the Eyre Highway to Penong Corner
in May 1984.
Just have a look at the following tables to
see the dramatic effect that the electric
fence has had on the numbered of breaches to
the original “vermin-proof’ fence. It is
almost unbelievable!
